I never cared about dragons one way or another. I didn't seek out books about them or draw their pictures when I doodled. I didn't pay much attention as to why they pop up throughout the world in many cultures with their leathery wings and spiked spines and fiery breath.
But, for whatever reason, they sought me out, whispering tales in my ears and making them spill out my fingers.
Maybe dragons are your power animal. Where you born in the year of the dragon?

Jemi: I've begun to create mythologies of my own concerning them. Interestingly, the myths were developed differently in two WIPs.
Flying dragons are my favorite. Somehow they are less threatening than the lumbering earth bound variety.

ReplyDeleteFunny, because this morning I was thinking about George R.R. Martin and wondering if he set out to write a book with dragons. Maybe they're just very good at sneaking up on authors and whispering stories in their ears.

I want dragons to be real. It doesn't seem that far-fetched, at least back in the days of knights and wizardry. E. Nesbit's "The Deliverers of Their Country" is a fun one, and "The Reluctant Dragon" by Kenneth Grahame. Patricia Wrede's "Dealing With Dragons" series is delightful, and then there's Jane Yolen. Maybe I just cut my reading teeth on dragons. Lovely post.
