Random haiku

silent pair of crows--
scraps of black velvet soaring
on an updraft.

That's it. A random haiku written in my head while walking. Now back into the land of my fairytale to see where the updrafts take me.

Just lovely, Tricia--not only for the wonderful use of sound devices (esp. the assonance), but also for seeing common crows in a moment of uncommon elegance.

Laurel: Ah, I'm glad you see what I saw. I was startled when the light glinting off their feathers looked like velvet. That sparked the haiku.

Jan: This is my favorite way to write haiku, just be walking and have the words form from what I see.

Marcia: Thank you!

Indigo: Aw, that's such a wonderful comment. Thanks!

Corey: Oh, I love it when you like my haiku!

Kathryn: No! I don't. Those poor blackbirds. I'm in California, and I think you are too. Do you remember the crow die-off some years ago from West Nile virus? All of them disappeared from my town, but they've come back.

Donna: They really looked like that. sigh

GoldenEagle: I'm guessing you like lots of birds. :D Me, too.

Liza: Well, at least I'm trying my wings. ;)

Susan: So glad you like!

Jules: Oh, I'd love to fly up and up. Sometimes I watch hawks dipping, diving, soaring and long to have that power.

That was lovely, Tricia! I don't think I've ever written a haiku, but you manage to do it so effortlessly. And a beautiful photograph to accompany it. All your posts make me wish I lived near you. You seem like such a peaceful person.

Scraps of black velvet - such stunning imagery. I'm moved to seek an updraft of my own.

L'Aussie: Ethereal! What a lovely word for it. Thank you so much.

Carolina: I have to work at being peaceful, but I find peace in nature. It's always there someplace. I wish you were here to walk with me. :)
As for the haiku, I received some great advice years ago from a woman who started one of the first haiku magazines in the West. My love of nature combined with her tips probably helped it become a form I slip into naturally.

Viva: *grins* That makes me happy. Maybe we'll meet each other out there soaring.
